View from the seventh floor

Stadtpark station, with one of the Wienfluss portals in the background

Not as impressive as Karlsplatz or the imperial station at Hietzing . . . but not bad. (The Hofpavilion photo is from 2015:)

There are still several of these stations around, all built to a concept by Otto Wagner, the planner of the Stadtbahn between 1894 and 1901. The designs are as particular as Guimard’s Paris métro stations, but on a much larger scale as the stations are above ground. The plain white façades and green roofs are decorated with stylised foliage, flowers and wreaths.

About aides mémoires

This is a chronological list of things I have seen, places I have visited, and thoughts that have wandered through the space between my ears. A reading group of one; an art appreciation society limited by my preferences and prejudices; opera criticism by one who knows nothing about the subject.
