Architect Fritz Höger, built 1922-24

Expressionist brickwork for an counting house close to the port. Quite breathtaking.

Opposite was another block, the Sprinkenhof:

Close by was another building which seemed to have come out of Successionist Vienna:

So, although so much was destroyed during the 1943 bombing raids (and tens of thousand of people killed), façades of some buildings survived and were restored to give a flavour of what pre-war Hamburg was like.
