Bach’s Magnificat

At St Martin in the Fields with the Whitehall Choir and the Brandenburg Baroque soloists. They also performed Bach’s cantata Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis. I hadn’t listened to the complete Magnificat in over 35 years, so this was a treat. It was fitting to listen to it in a church, and from my position in the gallery I had a good view of the workings of the orchestra: watching the oboists fitting new reeds from small cases, seeing the “drummer” wait 20 minutes to make his contribution to the piece. (He applauded his colleagues at the end, as if in acknowledgment of their greater input!)
