Pruning the apple trees

img_9113

I’d never pruned the lowest branches of the apple trees since planting them 4 years ago (hence the oddly positioned glue bands), but today I finally tackled them. That meant that I had to hold back on pruning the upper branches (no more than one-third of the whole).

Now that all the leaves have fallen I can see how lop-sided the apple trees are as they try to escape the canopies of the cherry tree and the Japanese maple.
