I returned to Leighton Moss today to buy some steel entrance plates for new bird boxes (fortification against squirrel raids) and couldn’t resist a walk round the reserve. Hence I saw the rear end of a red deer. As with the otter last week, I don’t expect to see the whole animal . . . but it would have been nice to see its head rather than its rump. I also saw a couple of spotted woodpeckers: they really do look like painted wooden toys that you pull along on wheels. And a fearsome caterpillar as long as my little finger, which I think was some kind of hawk moth caterpillar. Not something you’d want to find in your salad.
