The garden went mad in my absence and unfurled all its greenery, so that now it’s like being in a verdant enclosure. Deep-pile green carpet and textured green walls. It’s taken a couple of days to bring it back to a manageable state. Ripping out forget-me-nots, dealing with black spot and aphids, weeding, mowing, planting out seedlings, clipping shrubs that have already flowered to give their later-flowering neighbours a chance, watering, sowing salad seeds . . . It’s a lovely feeling to be able to put all that behind me and simply enjoy being in the garden and see what is growing or flitting about.
