Milton Keynes from the tenth floor

I’m not sneering – honestly I’m not. After all, I like Rotterdam. And what better way of humanising tall buildings than by creating squares amongst them and opening cafés and shops all along the ground floors?

But . . .

Oh, it just seems too relentlessly commercial (only major chains), and so much space is given over to roads and car parks. But the shops are busy and the redways are frequently empty of pedestrians and cyclists, so perhaps that’s the way people like it.
